NZ December  - We fished our first serious flyfishing tournament on Lake Rotoaira over a beautiful November weekend. This was a boat fishing tournament under international fly fishing tournament rules and was both an enlightening and highly enjoyable occasion with lots of opportunity to catch up with old friends and meet some new keen fly aficionados. Drift fishing with drogues and fishing with teams of de-barbed wet flies is something I haven't done for over two decades. We used to fish this style with great success in the UK reservoirs when we lived in London for several years.Fly fishing tournamentIt quickly became apparent that we had got seriously rusty with this technique. I blanked the first session and the top angler from that 3 hour session landed 16 rainbows. Luckily everyone was very sharing and we quickly worked out that slow and medium sinking lines with at least one tungsten bead head nymph or wet fly was doing the trick for many competitors using a fast strip and hang retrieve. It was great to see many anglers using the same products we sell and promote which reiterates that they are the highest quality brands. This tournament attracts many of New Zealands top professional competitive fly anglers and casters and they are very specific with their tackle selection. It was certainly a good reminder for us to explore stillwater fishing more often. With the right equipment and know how lakes can yield very high quality fly fishing in terms of quantity, size and condition of trout. As always it pays to talk to locals and finding the zones with the highest the concentrations of fish should be your first priority. Weather conditions, depth, temperature, feed, oxygenation and many other factors play an important role in when and where fish congregate. Fish finders and GPS are fantastic tools that when properly applied can greatly increase your odds.

We've also had a reasonable crack on the rivers and streams and it's great to see the evening rise in full swing. December should prove a very productive and exciting month for dry fly anglers, we have had some excellent sessions starting from late evening and continuing into dark. One night we landed 18 fish between the two of us with rainbows and browns of all shapes, sizes and condition factors going hard on caddis, mayfly and sedge. The dry fly size was the critical factor on this particular occasion and not the specific pattern. Any size 12 parachute style dryfly was doing the deed and a fair few fish took the trailing CDC emerger sitting just below the surface film. Emergers are particularly deadly in the late afternoon and early evening when fish can often be spotted by faint bulgings and swirls as they feed just below the surface.
